What are thrift stores

Have you ever wanted to have an original Adidas shirt or jacket that isn’t in production anymore? Or maybe you have searched all the stores in your city and the neighboring tows in search of vintage, unusual or just plain cool clothes. In a thrift shop you may find all sorts of other stuff besides clothes. You may find old board games, vintage cameras or toys of all sorts. But you may find even new clothes and shoes that were given to the thrift store from overproductions of bigger shops. So what exactly is a thrift shop?

The best way to describe a thrift shop is to call it a second-hand shop. But this is not always true as they can sell even new clothes or shoes that were overproduced. These items usually cost a lot less than in a normal shop that would commercialize them. This is the beauty of thrift shops. You can find even new merchandise at lower prices. You can also find rare or weird items. For example, there are people who donate things they own and don’t need anymore to these shops. Because of this you may find a full collection of baseball trading cards or rare vinyl discs. There were cases when people found in such thrift shops even very rare vinyl’s like the dark green that glows in the dark vinyl that holds the single Fade to Black by the heavy metal band Metallica. Besides music you can also find rare or unusual clothes that may be on your likings. There are some thrift shops that sell clothes at very low prices. These stores will usually sell their merchandise by the pound and depending on how new their stock is the price may be reduced even lower. Imagine buying three pounds of shoes or of t-shirts. You won’t need any more of them ever again.

To give the thrift shop a proper definition you will need to know the meaning of the word thrift. Thrifty basically means wise spending and this is exactly what you are doing when you buy from a thrift shop. You spend less money on very expensive clothes. Of course these clothes are only expensive in the big shops; in the thrift shops you will get them for a few nickels. You can also find very rare items that are searched by collectors all around the world. You just might buy a vintage camera for a dollar and sell it for a few thousands to someone who collects such items.
